Dinner Party

A sophisticated classic from the golden age of cocktails, the Abbey combines the botanical crispness of dry gin with the brightness of fresh orange juice and aromatic bitters. A close relative to the Bronx cocktail, it serves as a refreshing apéritif.

What it tastes like

The aroma is dominated by juniper and fresh citrus oils. On the palate, the dry gin provides a sharp botanical backbone balanced by the mild acidity of the orange juice. The mouthfeel is light and clean, finishing with a crisp dryness and a subtle hint of spiced orange.

Substitutions

  • Dry GinOld Tom Gin — This creates a richer mouthfeel and adds a noticeable sweetness that balances the orange acidity.
  • Fresh Orange JuiceClementine Juice — This substitution increases the tartness and provides a more concentrated citrus aroma.
  • Orange BittersAngostura Bitters — This introduces notes of clove and cinnamon, shifting the profile toward a spicier character.
  • Maraschino CherryOrange Peel — Replacing the fruit with an expressed peel emphasizes the essential oils and removes the syrupy finish.

Variations

Abbey Road

Replace the orange juice with lemon juice and add a barspoon of maraschino liqueur for a sharper, more floral profile.

The Monastery

Use Lillet Blanc in place of orange juice to create a clear, wine-based texture with honeyed citrus notes.
