Gluehwein
A traditional German mulled wine ('Glow Wine') typically enjoyed during the holidays and at Christmas markets. This warming beverage features a base of red wine gently heated with a spiced syrup infused with cinnamon, cloves, and lemon peel.
Ingredients
- 1 L Red Wine
- 125 ML Water
- 60 ML Sugar
- 1 WHOLE Cinnamon Stick
- 3 WHOLE Cloves
- 1 TBSP Lemon Peel
How to Make It
- Place the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, and lemon peel into a pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil to dissolve the sugar and release the spice flavors.
- Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for 30 minutes.
- Strain the spiced water to remove the solid ingredients.
- Return the spiced liquid to the pot and add the red wine.
- Heat the mixture slowly over low heat until it is hot but not boiling (approximately 170°F/75°C). Avoid boiling to preserve the alcohol content, unless a lower ABV is desired.
- Taste and add a splash of lemon or orange juice if additional acidity is desired.
- Ladle into heat-resistant glasses and serve hot.
