Karsk
A legendary traditional cocktail from the Trøndelag region of Norway. Karsk is renowned for its potency and its unique folk preparation method involving a coin. The name derives from the Old Norse word 'karskr', meaning healthy or vigorous. It combines hot coffee with a significant amount of neutral grain spirit or moonshine.
What it tastes like
The aroma is dominated by roasted coffee beans and sharp ethanol. The mouthfeel is thin and watery, providing a harsh, warming sensation due to the extremely high alcohol content. It tastes primarily of bitter espresso with a clean, medicinal heat that persists through the finish.

Substitutions
- Grain Alcohol (96%)High-proof Bourbon — This introduces oak and vanilla notes while significantly lowering the overall ABV.
- Hot CoffeeStrong Black Tea — Using tea instead of coffee creates a lighter body and introduces more tannic astringency.
- Copper CoinTeaspoon — A spoon can serve as a visual marker for depth if a coin is unavailable, though it is less traditional.
Variations
Kaffekask
Swap the grain alcohol for brandy or a standard 40% ABV vodka for a less intense and more palatable version.
Nordic Sweetener
Add a single sugar cube to the bottom of the mug before the coffee to mitigate the bitterness and the sharp burn of the spirit.
