A distinguished classic often regarded as a precursor to the modern Martini. This cocktail balances the botanical complexity of gin with the rich, herbal sweetness of red vermouth. It offers a smooth, aromatic profile that serves excellently as a sophisticated aperitif.

What it tastes like

The aroma is dominated by juniper and aromatic herbs from the sweet vermouth. On the palate, the piney gin notes are balanced by the dark fruit and spice of the fortified wine. The mouthfeel is silky and medium-bodied, leading to a clean, dry finish with lingering herbal bitterness.

Substitutions

  • GinVodka — The drink becomes much cleaner and loses the botanical complexity provided by juniper.
  • Sweet VermouthDry Vermouth — This creates a standard dry martini with a much more astringent and herbal profile.
  • Sweet VermouthLillet Blanc — Lillet adds honeyed floral notes and reduces the overall spice intensity.
  • GinOld Tom Gin — Using a maltier, slightly sweeter gin results in a richer profile closer to a Martinez.

Variations

Lone Tree with Bitters

Add two dashes of orange bitters to the mixing glass to bridge the gap between the botanical gin and spicy vermouth.

Sloe Lone Tree

Replace half of the gin with sloe gin to introduce a tart, plum-like fruitiness and a deep red color.
